Independence Through Responsibility

Students

We are determined to provide the best opportunities to develop Independence though Responsibility

Educational Philosophy

Fairfield parents and teachers accept that they, together, have the responsibility of helping each child learn the knowledge and skills, and to develop those attitudes which will enable him/her to live a full and satisfying life both as a child and an adult within a rapidly changing society. They believe that a well managed school and an attractive environment will enhance learning.

Camping

Each year our Year 3&4 camp at the Museum, our 5&6 have a 4 day experience camping at either Camp Iona or Palmerston Girl Guide camp. The Year 7 children got to Berwick and our Year 8 children rotate over 3 years from Wellington, Cross Country skiing to Stewart Island

Aims

The aims of these camps are to:
• Develop personal confidence in challenging social and physical situations
• Develop team work and cooperative skills
• Develop Independence Through Responsibility
• Encourage healthy life options through activity
• Enhance student social skills and broaden friendship groups

Camp activities

These camps provide a variety of different activities while on camp.

• Sailing
• Canoeing
• Orienteering
• Abseiling
• River crossing
• Rock climbing
• Tramping
• Art
• Music composition
• Tepapa tours
• Fishing
• Visiting Parliament
• Using public transport

Accommodation

In year 3&4 the children sleep on the floor in the museum and have a simple breakfast provided.

Camp Iona and the Girl Guide camps are situated in well-established grounds with bunk and hut room facilities. The kitchens are excellent and suitably built to cater for large numbers

Student Safety

All education outside the classroom activities are based on a “safety first” approach. Detailed risk analysis is undertaken and contingency planning is completed for each event. We always try to minimise or eliminate risks .We have high standards in practise in this area and all planning is checked by the Principal and BOT before camping can proceed.
