About Fairfield School

We are proud of our tradition of bringing Full Primary School education to Fairfield students over the past 128 years.

Fairfield school is a decile 10, state funded full primary school with approximately 350 pupils. The school was first established in 1872 and is located in the suburb of Fairfield in Dunedin, New Zealand.

The school is proud of its reputation and well developed literacy and numeracy programmes which provide the best opportunities to develop each individuals potential, self esteem and readiness for life.

You can be assured that we remain committed to our School Values of:

• Excellence
• Respect
• Responsibility
• Honesty & Truthfulness
• Innovation, inquiry & curiosidy
• Diversity
• Equity
• Community Participation
• Ecological Sustainability

The school has a fully integrated apple computer network providing high quality digital access in all classes and our computer suite in the school. As well we run a wireless airport network to support our laptop based activities.

We are also proud of our cultural programme in the school which provides opportunities in choir, orchestra, ensemble, Kapa Haka, guitar, rock band and dance.

A very special feature of our school is the Year 7&8 classes. The continuity of education for children from Year 1 to Year 8 is an excellent concept. They are among teachers and children they know well and are in an environment they helped create. They have a sense of belonging.

There is a close bond that has developed between all groups in our local community and I urge you to take the opportunity to become involved.

Fairfield School has an enrolment scheme but currently has spaces available at most levels of school. It also accepts applications from international students.

My door is always open to discuss any facet of your child's education. Every teacher is more than willing to talk to you on any matter regarding the welfare of your child as well.

This is your school. We wish you and your child well with your association with us.

Principal

History

In 1872 the school was established and began with a roll of 27 girls and 30 boys. John Blair was appointed as the first teaching principal. He taught in a single - room Mission House which was replaced by a two bed roomed wooden building situated on the Main South Road where the Fairfield store is now. The mission house remained as a meeting house and later as a library. Following the fire that destroyed the Walton School on January 1st, 1951, schooling was carried on in the school house where up to 130 pupils and their teachers occupied. After over two years in the residence school, the children were settled in their new school, on the present site on 17th March, 1953.
